Users of a Kelty Gila series backpack will notice the pack does not fit correctly: The hipbelt pushes up into the ribcage and doesn't wrap correctly around the hips. OV Innovations can modify packs that utilize the Kelty-licensed Mystery Ranch Wrapframe suspension system to dramatically improve comfort, performance and durability. This upgrade can be performed on the following packs:

  • Gila 6500, Gila 6503
  • Klamath 7200, Klamath 7203
  • Arctic Fox 7250
  • Kodiak 7200, Kodiak 7203

Our upgrade will ensure the packbag does not sag on the frame, which will prevent the hipbelt from angling upward aggressively as well as allow the frame to wrap around the hips. Because we reinforce the frame and correct how a load is distributed, reliability and stability are increased as well.

We perform the following modifications to improve fit:

  • The frame's lower attachment flap is removed and a new one constructed. This stronger attachment flap is attached directly to the frame's support structure, several inches above the location of the previous flap. This improvement allows the weight of the packbag to properly transfer to the frame while preventing the packbag from sagging and eliminating the hipbelt's upward cant.
  • The horizontal aluminum stay found on the frame's lumbar region is removed, allowing the frame to wrap around the hips as designed.
  • The aluminum frame stays are molded to match the contours of the spine, further improving comfort.

Please note that this is a labor-intensive modification that will involve disassembling the lower section of the Wrapframe. Additionally, this upgrade lengthens the hipbelt several inches, which will be especially perceptible for thinner users. The hipbelt will best fit waists 32" and up.

Order Fulfillment Instructions

This modification will require you to send us your packbag and Wrapframe.
After checkout, please follow these steps:

1. Separate the pack lid, external frame and yellow inner aluminum tube frame, and thoroughly clean and dry the packbag inside and out (the aluminum tube frame can be removed by unfastening the two Velcro flaps on the inside top of the packbag). A standard garden hose with a nozzle works well for this purpose. Be sure to dry your pack out of direct sunlight. Packs that are not cleaned before shipment will incur a $30 cleaning fee.

2. Box the packbag, frame and fiberglass rod (we do not need the pack lid, inner aluminum frame or any accessories). If you are not mailing the pack under the name used during checkout, please write the full name used during checkout on the outside of the box with permanent marker. As your pack will be returned in the box in which we receive it, ensure it can be opened and resealed without undue hassle (i.e. do not simply wrap the pack and frame in plastic without using a box).

Mail your pack and frame to:
OV Innovations
39506 N. Daisy Mountain Dr. #122-194
Phoenix, AZ 85086

We are not responsible for packs lost during transit, so please purchase insurance through the respective carrier.

3.Your pack will be returned to you in about 4 weeks and we cover return shipping. If you would like your pack shipped back to you by a particular carrier or service, please let us know in the order notes section during checkout. If no preference is made, we will use either USPS Parcel Select or UPS Ground, whichever is cheaper.
